Migrant Worker's Support Program

The Migrant Workers Support Program is funded by Economic and Social Development Canada, and administered in Thunder Bay in partnership between the Newcomer Legal Clinic, The Thunder Bay Multicultural Association, and the Neighbourhood Organization in Toronto.

The aim of the program is to:

  • Provide migrants with information and support to exercise their rights
  • Increase migrant workers’ awareness of their rights
  • Help them access the services they need to exercise their rights
  • Foster inclusion of migrant workers in the community
  • Support migrant workers during emergency situations
  • Develop coordinated approaches to supporting temporary migrant workers in the
    community

Who Is A Migrant Worker?

The term migrant workers refer to individuals who have moved to Canada to work, whether this was their primary intention or as a means of survival. In other words, they are foreign nationals who are not citizens nor permanent residents who engage in work in Canada.

Migrant workers can enter Canada via different programs, such as through the federal Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP), which includes the Agricultural Stream and Seasonal Agricultural Worker Program (SAWP).
